Final Wild Play session of ‘Tales of the River’ project to take place this month

Watford Borough Council and Groundwork East are inviting families to join in on Tuesday, August 26, from 12.30pm to 2pm at Oxhey Park.

This free event is perfect for children aged three to nine, offering them a chance to explore the River Colne’s history and the industries it once supported.

The session includes hands-on activities, making learning about Watford’s past both interactive and fun.

“Tales of the River”, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, has been an educational initiative that engaged many families in the area over the past year.

It aimed to bring the hidden riverside history of the town to life through storytelling, wild play, and heritage sessions.

Although this is the concluding Wild Play session, the project hopes to continue inspiring families in the area to appreciate and protect the River Colne.

Ian Stotesbury, councillor responsible for sustainability and transport, said: “This project has shown how heritage, nature and sustainability go hand in hand.

“As we wrap up the Wild Play sessions, we want to ensure this is not the end but the beginning of an ongoing community connection with our river and green spaces.

“I encourage everyone to join us for the Tales of the River Festival on August 9, a wonderful opportunity to celebrate together and explore what the river means to Watford today.”

The council urges those wishing to attend to book their free tickets in advance by visiting the Eventbrite website.

Further details about the session can also be found on the same platform.

As the largest dedicated funder of the UK’s heritage, The National Lottery Heritage Fund’s vision is for heritage to be valued, cared for and sustained for everyone, now and in the future as set out in the strategic plan, Heritage 2033.
