Concert given by Watford Symphony Orchestra

27th April @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

 Watford Symphony Orchestra Concert

Richard Strauss: Wind Serenade in E flat

Bizet: Carmen Suite

Sibelius: Symphony no 5

Our next orchestral concert, conducted by Stuart Dunlop, will take place on Saturday 27th April at our usual venue, St.Luke’s Church, Langley Way, Watford WD17 3EG. The concert commences at 7.30pm.

Our programme contains music of quite contrasting moods, from an early work by the then youthful Richard Strauss, to the familiar sounds of Bizet’s Suite of melodies from Carmen, counterbalanced by the epic 5th Symphony of Sibelius.

Richard Strauss’ Serenade for Wind Instruments opus 7 is a remarkable piece, written when he was only 16 years old. It already bears many hallmarks of the Late Romantic style that we associate with his mature work, as the composer of operas such as “Der Rosenkavalier”, and his orchestral tone poems.

The world of Bizet’s opera “Carmen” is at once recognisable, and many of the well-known scenes and arias are here represented in the 2 Orchestral Suites to be performed in our concert. The dramatic spirit of Spain is vividly portrayed throughout the music, music which has captivated audiences ever since its birth!

The final work in the evening’s concert will be Sibelius’s Symphony no 5 in E flat. Sibelius is sometimes referred to as being the natural successor to Beethoven, in the heroic and ground-breaking mould of that great symphonic composer. In this symphony, Sibelius perhaps lays claim to those epithets, such is the power and sweep of the music, as it unfolds to reach its magnificent and dramatic close in its final pages.

Do come along and experience an evening of great music, performed by Watford’s own accomplished and highly regarded orchestra!
